Astroneer Interview: 1.0 Represents A Big Jump Forward

Originally launching into Steam Early Access and Microsoft’s Game Preview program in December of 2016, Astroneer struck a chord with players by offering an outer space sandbox with a unique art style and cooperative hijinx. The game has seen several large content updates since that time, most recently the Rover Update that launched last month. With the game’s systems in place and approaching a final release, the development team at System Era made the trek to Los Angeles to show off the game during E3 2018. System Era Communications Director (and former Shacknews top boy) Joe Tirado sat down with Shacknews during the show to talk about the team’s drive to official release and what Astroneer fans can look forward to in the future.

Tirado dives into when the team decides that the game is officially ready for “1.0” and the importance of communicating progress to fans and early access backers. The journey from a four man team with an idea to a full realized game has been a long road for the team. They realize the stigma around early access and Tirado explains that the team did not want to linger in that situation any longer than needed.

The team is anticipating the official release so they can begin work on expanding the core systems to include functionality that’s been on their development roadmap. Astroneer will officially launch this December. Possible new features include automation, farming, customization, and a creative mode. Check the full interview for more details on Astroneer and for more hot Tirado action.
