For a generation of Batman fans, Kevin Conroy is not just a voice actor, he is Batman. Conroy first portrayed the the characters of Bruce Wayne and Batman in Batman: The Animated Series back in 1992. He reprised the role for the feature film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and the various spinoff series and movies that followed. He also lent his vocal talents to the extremely popular Batman games produced by Rocksteady Studios over the last decade. We got a chance to speak with Kevin Conroy while at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and asked him about the challenges of giving a performance for a video game versus the work he did for the animated Batman projects.
Conroy explained that recording dialogue for the caped crusader for video games was an entirely different experience than what he was used to when working on Batman: The Animated Series. He likened the work on the animated show to that of an early twentieth century radio play because all of the other voice actors were present in the same room and could work off each other’s performances. The process of performing lines for the video game version of Batman is draining because of the lengthy sessions and because he is required to flesh out the performance within his own imagination.
The legendary voice actor lamented the lack of the give and take approach to the ensemble performances from the animated projects and declared that working on the video games was much more difficult.
