Most companies are fairly tight-lipped when discussing the active VR user count but reasonable estimates can be made with the information we're given. Valve opened up about SteamVR a bit while speaking at the White Nights St. Petersburg 2018 conference and, among the 43 million daily active users the company has recorded, virtual reality users specifically are up 160% year-over-year.
Comparing Steam's hardware and software survey to the newly revealed numbers from this talk, Road To VR gave an estimate that 611,100 VR headsets were attached to PCs running Steam in June 2018. Another take from the survey, reported by On MSFT, reveals the Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality headsets have hit their second highest monthly market share with 6.25%. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive take up the rest of that pie with a nearly even split.
Oculus has its own platform metrics, as does Sony with PlayStation VR, and there are a ton of other VR headsets scattered out in the wild. Thus, these numbers are just a snapshot of what's going on in the world of virtual reality gaming and media. What's your take on it all? Whether we're in the first or second generation of VR, surely the SteamVR Knuckle EV2 controller will usher us into the next gen.
Let us know in Chatty if you agree with Todd Howard that VR will blossom during its third generation or if you have a completely different take altogether. Stay tuned to Shacknews for more tech updates.
